Education

The transformation of Smith High School’s CTE wing established a bold, future-focused environment for career-based learning, creating a distinct identity for the Ben L. Smith Signature Career Academy and redefining how students engage with engineering and manufacturing education within Guilford County Schools.

Designed to support hands-on, skills-based learning, the renovated spaces foster creativity, collaboration, and real-world application. The academy now operates as an independent, purpose-driven environment within the existing campus. It reflects the energy and innovation of its programs while offering students a sense of ownership and pride in their learning experience.

To realize this vision, Neighboring Concepts partnered closely with Guilford County Schools to reimagine a portion of the existing school as a flexible, high-performing learning environment. The design strategically integrates collaboration zones, instructional spaces, and hands-on workshop areas, ensuring seamless visual connectivity and alignment with specialized equipment needs.

A layered material and lighting strategy brings the space to life. Dynamic ceiling treatments, targeted accent walls, and bold floor patterns introduce rhythm and movement, while a vibrant color palette establishes a clear visual departure from the rest of the school. The result is a highly adaptable, expressive environment that supports evolving program needs while giving the Ben L. Smith Signature Career Academy a strong and recognizable identity.
